A representation (usually on a flat medium) of all or a portion of the EARTH or other CELESTIAL BODY, showing the relative size and position of features to some given SCALE or PROJECTION; also, a representation of all or part of the CELESTIAL SPHERE. A map may emphasize, generalize, or omit the representation of certain features to satisfy specific requirements. Maps are frequently categorized and referred to according to the type of information which they are primarily desi­gned to convey, to distinguish them from maps of other types.

Carte.f ReprÉsentation plane, à une certaine ÉCHELLE et selon un système de PROJECTION déterminé, de tout ou partie de la surface de la TERRE (ou d'un autre CORPS CÉLESTE) ; ou encore représentation plane de tout ou partie de la SPHÈRE CÉLESTE. Selon le type de carte, certains détails de la région représentée peuvent être soit mis en évidence, soit au contraire omis. Les cartes sont généralement classées et désignées d'après la nature des renseignements qu'elles donnent. Ce terme englobe les cartes spéciales comme celles destinées à la navigation. Formeffondamentale.Lorsqu’une CARTE MARINE existe sous plusieurs formes, leur partie commune est appelée forme fondamentale ou parfoiscarte de base. Les cartes dérivées sont appelées VARIANTES.

Planmcadastral. PLAN b) sur lequel sont représentés les parcelles selon lesquelles est divisé un territoire, notamment les limites de propriété. Il constitue l’élément graphique du CADASTRE.

Cartefen courbes (de niveau). CARTE TOPOGRAPHIQUE dans laquelle le RELIEF est représenté au moyen de COURBES DE NIVEAU. Dans le cas des fonds marins on parle de CARTE BATHYMÉTRIQUE ou de CARTE D’ISOBATHES.
